CHEROKEE RANCH AND CASTLE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER

CHEROKEE RANCH AND CASTLE WEDDING | SARAH + CHRIS

A world away from where bride & groom grew up, the gentle grassy rolling hills of Sedalia / Castle Rock have always called to them. Romantic backroads, and vistas that stretch beyond eyesight. It seemed natural to host a Cherokee Ranch wedding to show off Colorado's beauty to friends who flew in from around the world. After a gift exchange (nice watch!) early in the day, the bride and groom arranged for a private first look and a few pre-ceremony photos. Before anyone knew it, it was ceremony time, and a trusted friend presided over the vow exchange. Some family photos and golden light bride+groom pics later, it was time for the over the top reception that rocked late into the night. A perfect dusk glow seemed to linger forever.

KEEPER OF THE CASTLE

It takes a little time to take in the awesomeness of Cherokee Ranch & Castle fully. Part Downton Abbey, part Black Stallion ranch the castle sits on a perch overlooking the sprawling southland along the foothills southwest of Denver. One of Denver's most famous early land developers, Carl Johnson combined two beautiful properties and in the roaring 1920s built a Scottish castle that took a full two years to complete. The Johnson family spent over two decades on the farm and later sold it to equestrian Tweet Kimball. Kimball gave the estate the Cherokee name and in the 1950s increased its acreage to 3,400 — its size to this day. She put the ranch on the agribusiness map when against odds and advice, she brought Santa Gertrudis cattle from Texas to Colorado. They flourished here and now are bred all over the world. You might grab a glimpse of the famed offspring roaming the grassy plains. There's no end to photo opportunities and time is the most significant limiting factor — not locations. All the cool archways, patios, doors, chairs & stairs are perfect frames for your posse.

HOW I WORK

I recommend starting wedding photography 2 hours before the ceremony. After a few non-scripted last-minute prep and personal details photos, we can be efficient and capture the wedding party and small family groups before the ceremony, allowing you more time to mingle with guests during the cocktail hour.

Over the years, I’ve learned to be a dynamic photographer and to respond quietly to unfolding action. Two lighting-fast cameras and a photojournalist’s sense allow me to answer three questions with a camera ... 1) What’s the big picture? 2) What are the details? 3) What’s the emotion? All day, that little voice in the head cycles through those questions, and I’m on the hunt for storytelling answers. You see this throughout all the galleries on my website. Big, wide-angle scenes, mixed with tight single-thought images, with a layer of emotion revealing moments.

Above all, our minds subconsciously value the quality of light in a photo, and I’ve grown an instant ability to size up lighting in a scene for best results. Can I move subjects just a few steps to get a more flattering look on their faces? Should I quickly turn on mobile lighting to even out (or add subtle highlights) a scene at the venue with flat or unflattering light? You can’t fix bad light in a computer—it has to be right when you click the shutter, and an experienced pro is surfing a wedding day looking for waves of good light (or we make them with fast-moving equipment).

Group photos and portraits don’t happen automatically, and I offer strong guidance to get balanced photos with good posture & harmony with the scene. These clicks wind up as 5x7’s on a mantel for decades, and I want them to be timelessbut light and serene.
