Recently while working on another project, I got the opportunity to spend an afternoon with the soundsmiths at Studio L Weirton WV. Note – a bit of hero worship here. Studio L’s proprietor is guitarist Rick Witkowski who (among a zillion other things) was guitarist & arranger for Crack The Sky back in the day. In High School & College I hung out with people that were big CTS fans so it was quite a thrill to eventually get to know Rick and Deborah (working on various projects when I was at WDVE). Fast forward to this photo romp. I hadn’t been back to the L mothership in almost 20 years, and it was a great big warm flashback. The old coke machine’s still there, and visitors get a workout practicing the 10th Commandment (thou shall not covet Ricky’s guitar collection).

uber-talented Anthony Rankin (he’s so dreamy)

In the last shot, my ear is right in line with the Marshall blow hole as Rick was taking our request for iconic CTS licks. He was such a champ as we’d shout out, “Surf City” … “Lighten Up McGraw” … “Ice”. Audio bliss as he’d belt out the riffs that were actually better than my memory. He’s got such game.
A very fun day.
