Midnight Ranch near Steamboat Springs is a wide-open, sprawling bit of Colorado beauty. Scenery that goes for miles, an awesome party tent, and a genuine down home feel missing from a lot of big name mountain venues.
Meet Alita. She goes in a special place in the tomK memory books not for being beautiful, smart or funny (she’s all those things). She doesn’t get remembered for planning her Steamboat Springs wedding from her house in Italy. She goes down in the bride’s Hall Of Fame for waking up early on her wedding day and cooking all the food!
The block of photos that follows represents a proud parenting moment for your photographer. My daughter, Helen, tagged alone on this trip to practice her photo skills and enjoy the scenery. Alita asks, “would your daughter mind coming up to the master suite while I get my dress on?” Sure, why not (confident she could shoot it). What follows is my 14-year-old daughter’s entrace into professional photography …
I think she nailed it (ok, I’m biased). Before you judge, let me add … Alita’s Mom had a wardrobe malfunction and Helen was running around looking for (and helping her with) needle and thread. So she’s helping with clothes repair WHILE shooting an unfolding event. Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a wedding natural! I wish someone had a photo of me while I was grinning, looking at her images on the camera playback screen as she’s telling the needle and thread story. “OK honey, just shoot what you like for the rest of the day.” Helen’s images are mixed in. The tomK spin on Take Your Daughter To Work Day, lol.
Alita was only able to pull off her DIY wedding with the help of her sister / maid of honor — never less than a big smile while barking orders into the 2-way radio. Always there, always on top of it.
Denny’s one cool cat who’s a Denver petroleum executive on assignment in Europe. He proposed to Alita on the shores of Lake Como (wish I was there to take photos). He’s proud of his getaway car, a BMW 650 drop top. Shines so much I can see your reflection. Hey Denny, where’s the honeymoon? Hawaii? Costa Rica? Nope — “Back to Lake Como.” Nice.
